ABOUT THE PROJECT
More than two decades after the last presentation in Brazil, SPC will hold a virtual performance and workshop this month. Artistic director, Stephen Petronio, will give a free online workshop on February 24th and 25th, from 1 pm to 4 pm. Before that, on the 23rd, at 7:00 pm, Petronio’s two most recent works will be presented online: “American Landscapes” (2019) and “Are You Lonesome Tonight” (2020). The exhibition will be preceded by a chat between Petronio and the director and producer, Monique Gardenberg, creator of the extinct Carlton Dance Festival, which was attended by Stephen Petronio Company twice, in 1991 and 1995.
The project marks the resumption of CÂMBIO, an artistic programming project led by director and actor Cesar Augusto and producer Jonas Klabin, who carried out various festivals and curatorships between the years 2010 and 2015. Stephen Petronio Company’s participation in CÂMBIO has Mid Atlantic Arts support through USArtists International, in partnership with National Endowment for the Arts, Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and Howard Gilman Foundation.
The chat between Stephen Petronio and Monique Gardenberg, as well as the works “American Landscapes” and “Are You Lonesome Tonight”, will be available on YouTube, on the Cia. Dos Atores channel (youtube.com/ciadosatores ), a group that has Cesar Augusto among its founders. All material will remain available until March 5.
EXCHANGE is an artistic programming project that carried out various occupations, festivals and curatorships between 2010 and 2015 in Rio de Janeiro and, now in 2021, amid the pandemic, resumes activities in a virtual format. EXCHANGE contemplates redesigning cultural spaces, including virtual ones, offering a curatorship of shows and experiences on a platform that explores the different possibilities of relationship between stage and audience. Betting on its definition, the programming is full of exchange: artists who are in ascending production; projects from other states and countries; successful and unprecedented shows; musicals, music shows, cabaret, musical sketches, dance, magazine theater, dramatized readings, poetry and workshops, creating a popular, rich, diverse and accessible program for everyone. ABOUT EXCHANGE
The first edition of CÂMBIO occupied the Teatro Estadual Glaucio Gill from 2010 to 2011, while the second edition occupied the Teatro Municipal Café Pequeno from 2012 to 2015. In both theaters, the stages were restructured and the curatorship created diverse programs, including theater, music , dance, cinema and festivals, with a guiding thread defining a profile of contemporary and popular productions of language and cultural value distinction. In the first edition, there were a total of sixty shows, 394 sessions, 23 thousand spectators and one nomination in the special category of the 2011 APTR Award. In the second edition, there were about 100 shows, 720 sessions and 6 thousand spectators.
